Discover the Beauty of Yukata: What It Is and How to Wear It
Why Try Wearing a Yukata?
Wearing a yukata is a fun and beautiful way to experience Japanese culture—without the complexity of a traditional kimono. It’s perfect for summer events, cultural festivals, or just taking photos with friends. You don’t need to be an expert—just try it on, and you’ll instantly feel the charm and elegance of Japanese tradition!

What is a Yukata?
A yukata is a casual, lightweight kimono, perfect for summer.
It became popular during Japan’s Edo period (1600s), when people wore it after visiting public bathhouses to stay cool on warm evenings.
Today, you’ll see yukata at summer festivals, fireworks displays, and Bon Odori dances across Japan. It’s a classic part of summer!
Simple & Comfortable to Wear
One of the best things about yukata is how simple they are to wear.
Unlike formal kimono, you don’t need layers of special undergarments or complicated accessories. Just a yukata, an obi (belt), and a few ties are enough—and yes, you can learn to put it on by yourself!
Most yukata are made of breathable cotton, perfect for staying cool during hot summer days. The fabric absorbs sweat, feels soft on the skin, and helps you stay comfortable all day.
Caring for your yukata is simple too. Gentle hand-washing is recommended to help preserve the delicate fabric and colors. Taking a little extra care will keep your yukata looking beautiful for years to come.
Whether you're heading to a festival or just relaxing at home, yukata offer both comfort and style.

Basic Steps:
-
Put on a slip or light undergarments
You don’t need any special kimono underwear—just something lightweight and comfortable. -
Wrap the yukata left over right
(Important: always left over right! The other way is only for funerals in Japan.) -
Tie a sash (koshi-himo) around your waist
This keeps the yukata in place. -
Adjust the length and smooth out the fabric
Pull the excess fabric up and create a clean fold (called “ohashori”). -
Wrap the obi belt
Start with a simple bow or ribbon style. You don’t need to be perfect!
👘 Tip:
Don’t worry if it’s not perfect the first time. Just like tying a scarf or putting on a new kind of outfit, it gets easier with practice. And honestly—slightly casual looks are totally okay for yukata!
